Next stop in our LSG journey was The Last Call. Opened in April 2012, Executive Chef Luis Enrique Valdovinos has been cooking up Baja Mexican Street cuisine to the Nob Hill community. Originally operating out of a food truck in San Diego, Chef Luis moved to Albuquerque to bring a new cuisine to an area in love with new food and restaurant concepts.
The atmosphere of The Last Call is just cool. The inside is small, with just enough space for the kitchen and kitchen staff and a few extra chairs. But, they put a few tables and chairs on the sidewalk for comfy outdoor dining experience. There aren’t a lot of thrills and frills, and they like it that way. We did too. Now, let’s get to the food.
We started with an order of their truffle fries, served w/ the chef’s own chipotle ketchup. They were crispy, seasoned well with parmesan and parsley, and the chipotle ketchup was spiced well, and was not too tomatoey. They were awesome!
We both ordered California burritos ($7/each) for dinner. Here’s the description:
“Flour Tortilla + Carne Asada + Melted Jack/Cheddar Cheese + House cut Belgian style Fries + Mexican Cream + Chipotle Aioli + Chile de Arbol/Japanese Peanut Salsa + Lettuce”
Do I need to say more? Everything about the burrito was great. The tortilla was heated well, not burnt and not cod/hard. The carne asada was cooked/seasoned well. The fries complemented the steak well. My wife and I both agreed the best part was the Mexican Cream/Chipotle Aioli combo. It was an awesome blend of cream and spice.
For $25, this place was dynamite. The burritos were incredibly flavorful, the fries were a great starter, and the atmosphere was laid back summer atmosphere you’d hope for in a great burrito spot. This chef knows what he’s doing, and I am certain he’ll see more of us in the future.
Specials to note: several of our “in the know” friends gave us a heads up on their $1 taco Tuesday/Thursdays. We have heard great things about their fish tacos and hope to check them out soon. Look for an update!
